On the fourth night of the Teenage Cancer Trust’s 2025 concerts, London’s Royal Albert Hall bore witness to a performance brimming with history, heart, and raw rock power. The Who, led by the indefatigable Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, returned to the stage that has become synonymous with this charity’s legacy. And what a return it was.
Roger Daltrey, the charity's Honorary Patron, founded these concerts in 2000, raising a staggering £34 million over the years. As he introduced the show, Daltrey spoke movingly about meeting a remarkable 19-year-old woman battling stage 4 Ewing sarcoma, dedicating “I Can See For Miles” to her. Moments like these, steeped in genuine empathy, underscored why this event is about so much more than music.
The night wasn’t just about nostalgia. It was a celebration of resilience, community, and a shared mission to support young people facing unimaginable challenges. The appearance of survivors and a heartfelt story from Emma and Neil Hawksey, who lost their daughter Kirsten to cancer, reminded the audience why every note and lyric resonated with a greater purpose.
The Who’s set was a masterclass in rock history. Opening with the energetic “I Can’t Explain,” the band unleashed a torrent of classics, from “Who Are You” to “Pinball Wizard.” The emotional depth of “Behind Blue Eyes” paired beautifully with the fiery roar of “My Generation.” Pete Townshend’s guitar work drove the crowd wild, while Roger’s powerful vocals proved unwavering, even at 81. His secret? Drawing inspiration from the young fighters supported by Teenage Cancer Trust.
“Eminence Front” brought a funky touch, with drummer Zack Starkey shining as he surfed its hypnotic tape loop. And then came the titanic staples: “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” each song transcending its time, becoming a rallying cry for the evening’s cause.
The night ended on a tender note with “Tea & Theatre,” an impromptu and deeply moving performance from their 2006 album Endless Wire. Its raw emotion was a fitting close to a show that merged the timeless power of music with the urgency of compassionate action.
The show was an immersive experience, a reminder of The Who’s incredible legacy and the critical work of Teenage Cancer Trust. And for those lucky enough to witness it, it was a night to hold close, long after the final chord.
