NEWS/TOUR: Horsegirl release hypnotic new single ‘Switch Over’ lifted from anticipated second album....
New Album Phonetics On and On Out February 14th Summer UK & European Tour Dates Announced
The captivating New York-via-Chicago trio Horsegirl—comprised of best friends Nora Cheng, Penelope Lowenstein, and Gigi Reece—have unveiled their latest single and video, ‘Switch Over’, taken from their much-anticipated second album, Phonetics On and On, set to release on February 14th via Matador Records.
Following the widely praised singles ‘2468’ and ‘Julie’, ‘Switch Over’ takes a mesmerising turn. With its motorik rhythm and seamless vocal interplay between Cheng and Lowenstein, the track delivers an entrancing, minimalist groove that’s both intimate and expansive.
The accompanying video, directed by Guy Kozak, brings the song’s hypnotic essence to life with an uncanny “band-watching-band” concept. Featuring layered visuals of the trio observing themselves perform, the video amplifies the single’s themes of perspective and self-reflection.
Crafting the Sound of Phonetics On and On
Produced by the legendary Cate Le Bon and recorded at The Loft in Chicago, Phonetics On and On expands Horsegirl’s sonic universe. Known for their boundary-pushing creativity, the trio explores new textures and tools, including violins, synths, and even gamelan tiles, to craft an album rich in experimentation.
“This album feels like a love letter to our friendship and the creative freedom we’ve found together,” the band shares. With its honest storytelling and playful spirit, the record navigates themes of youth, girlhood, and vulnerability, underscored by Reece’s dynamic drum work and Lowenstein’s sparkling guitar leads.
Praise for Horsegirl’s Evolution
The buzz around Phonetics On and On follows glowing reviews for the band’s previous single ‘2468’:
“Chicago’s most historically minded young indie-rock group enters college, and, accordingly, its Raincoats phase; a deliciously off-kilter alternate-universe playground chant ensues.” — New York Times, Best Songs of 2024
“An extra-dimensional pop song, it epitomises the originality that has made Horsegirl so lauded right from the get-go.” — Clash
“Vibrating with the spindly twang and sawing violin of the Velvets and the Raincoats, the Chicago band consider their own Noah’s Arc on this Cate Le Bon-produced return.” — The Guardian
